URSONATE PERFORMED BY ABBIE FROM MARS

OK, stay with us here. This is going to be a bit of a ride.

Here at WPRB, excellent eclectic radio happens every day. Once in a while, we send something particularly mind-melting flying out through the airwaves (and over the webstream) into your tiny human ears and decide to preserve it for generations to come. On our blog.

This week, our beloved DJ Abbie from Mars made some delicious radio art out of Kurt Schwitters’s 1932 sound poem Ursonate. Schwitters was a German Dadaist who dabbled with many different art forms, including collage, painting, sculpture, and sound. Here he is:

What a jolly dude. Here at New Jersey’s Only Radio Station, we are most concerned with SOUND art and so SOUND art we shall provide. Listen to Abbie from Mars pay respect to our dude Kurt. The performance starts at 1:38, but start from the beginning to hear Abbie introduce the piece and contemplate getting into breakcore. Her performance is regal at times, nail-bitingly suspenseful at others. Let the sound poetry wash through your neurons and transcend that ol’ body of yours into a whole new realm of existence.

McDonald Brothers of Redd Kross on Esoterica’s show!

VALENTIINE’S DAY SPECIAL! This just in!

Rock Gods McDonald Brothers to call in to chat with Esoterica on The Sonic Bloom Wed., 2/14 at 2:05 p.m. EST!

Steven McDonald (Off!, Melvins, Redd Kross) and Jeff McDonald (Redd Kross, Ze Malibu Kids) started in a band called the Tourists in Hawthorne, CA in 1978 and they are still kicking out the jams, just returning from a European tour with the Melvins. Checking out Steve’s instagram this week reveals that, lucky for us, Redd Kross is working on another album. Tune in to 103.3 or stream at www.wprb.com on Wed., 2/14, at 2:05 p.m.(EST)/11:05 a.m. (PST) to hear Esoterica ask about this new Redd Kross project, other things Steve and Jeff are working on, as well as dig into the early days of SoCal punk.

What’s wrong with these Mozart Symphonies? (Tobias, MasterClassics)

Mozart’s symphonies numbered 30 through 34 are rarely played. The 29th made a lasting impression on 20th century musicians, and it is programmed frequently. The last three symphonies, 39, 40 and 41, get most of the programming time. The three big symphonies that precede these, the 35th, 36th, and 38th (there is no 37th) get a lot of attention also, and they have nicknames: The Haffner, the Linz, and the Prague. What happened between 29 and 35? Did Mozart’s symphonic composing fall into a trough?

In the next few weeks (Feb 13th through March, 2018), we will take a listen at these symphonies, beginning with the absolutely delightful 30th. We will see Mozart experimenting—just as he often did—and composing some music that deserves at least as much attention as the 29th.

MasterClassics with Tobias airs Tuesday mornings, 6 to 9am on WPRB.

Wed 1/31, 6PM: Nick Millevoi’s Desertion Duo live on Jon Solomon’s show

In support of the his new record “Midtown Tilt,” (ShhPuma) Nick Millevoi makes a return appearance on WPRB this week.

While the album is the latest for Nick Millevoi’s Desertion Trio, this time with Jamie Saft accompanying the group on organ, Millevoi will be joined for a guitar / bass collaboration by Ben Rosen.

This performance shall debut on Jon Solomon’s show this Wednesday, January 31st at 6:00 pm ET.

Then on Thursday, Millevoi celebrates his album’s release with a full band set at Johnny Brenda’s, supported by harpist Brandee Younger.

Stream selections from “Midtown Tilt” below and don’t miss Nick Millevoi’s Desertion Duo live on WPRB.

Guitarist Nick Millevoi’s (Chris Forsyth and the Solar Motel Band, John Zorn’s Bagatelles) Desertion project has created its second opus, Midtown Tilt. Now using the title Desertion Trio, the band features Johnny DeBlase (Many Arms, Sabbath Assembly) on bass, and Kevin Shea (Mostly Other People Do The Killing, Talibam!) at the drumkit, and follows 2016’s Desertion by also featuring guest Jamie Saft (Electric Masada, The New Standard Trio with and without Iggy Pop) on the organ. Vibraphonist and percussionist Ashley Tini joins on three tracks.
Much like Desertion, the formula for Midtown Tilt continues to follow an instrumental country-folkrock mix with elements from jazz, as we would expect from these musicians. The musicians improvise as if their lives depend on it, but also evoke an imagery that takes listeners through the history of instrumental electric guitar music. Inspired by the town of Wildwood, NJ and the anachronistic clash of re-imagined cultures seen in its motels and amusements, Midtown Tilt is an amalgamation of jazz, psychedelic blues, surf music, and country rock instrumentals, often reminding us of Neil Young’s Crazy Horse scoring a western. Through Saft’s organ, something else is added: traces of the rhythm and blues played by Booker T. & The M.G.’s and of the blues-rock of bands like The Spencer Davis Group, Traffic and Blind Faith. The mix is explosive.

WPRB’S TOP 103 OF 2017!

Another music organization, another top albums list. But ours is actually worth reading.

Tons of experimental, mind-melting, avant-whatever here, in many flavors: electronic, punk, folk, ambient, post-rock, zolo, kraut, emo, jazz, sludge, neo-classical, hip hop, industrial, math rock, done, shoegaze, leftfield, gross, weirdo, beegolb, joflig, hiofsie, fwiafl, fjeoiwjgl, fhowrjlw…

Thanks to everyone who made this a great year in music and radio! On-heckin’-ward!

Wed 7/5, 6PM: Interview with author Erin Osmon.

Listen to WPRB on Wednesday, July 5th at 6:00 pm ET when Jon Solomon interviews author Erin Osmon about her new book “Jason Molina: Riding with the Ghost” (Rowman & Littlefield, 2017).

It is an hour of conversation and music, combining discussion about Molina’s life with selections from both the Songs: Ohia and Magnolia Electric Co. catalogues.

Here’s a few words about Osmon’s superb book from the publisher, plus a song from a Songs: Ohia single recorded just down the road in Philadelphia.

Erin Osmon presents a detailed, human account of the Rust Belt–born musician Jason Molina—a visionary, prolific, and at times cantankerous singer-songwriter with an autodidactic style that captivated his devoted fans. The songwriting giant behind the bands Songs: Ohia and Magnolia Electric Co. had a knack for spinning tales, from the many personal myths he cultivated throughout his life to the poems and ballads he penned and performed. As with too many great musicians, Molina’s complicated relationship with the truth, combined with a secretive relationship with the bottle, ultimately claimed his life.

Jason Molina: Riding with the Ghost details Molina’s personal trials and triumphs and reveals for the first time the true story of Molina’s last months and works, including an unpublished album unknown to many of his fans. Offering unfettered access to the mind and artistry of Molina through exclusive interviews with family, friends, and collaborators, the book also explores the Midwest music underground and the development of Bloomington, Indiana–based label Secretly Canadian.

As the first authorized and detailed account of this prolific songwriter and self-mythologizer, Jason Molina provides readers with unparalleled insight into Molina’s tormented life and the fascinating Midwest musical underground that birthed him. It’s a story for the ages that speaks volumes to the triumphs and trials of the artistic spirit while exploring the meaningful music that Molina’s creative genius left behind.

Wed 6/28, 6PM: Psychic Teens live on Jon Solomon’s show

For the third time this month, Jon Solomon welcomes a live band to his Wednesday evening program. This time out terrifically melodic / impressively abrasive Philadelphia trio Psychic Teens stop by WPRB to perform. They’ll be playing songs from their new 12″ titled “Hex,” available on either yellow or green vinyl via Hex Records.

Hear the record in advance below.

That will make it easier to sing along when the Psychic Teens session premieres at 6:00 pm ET on June 28th.
