Mon. 11/17 12 – 3 PM – Spotlight on Cellist Tomeka Reid with Dan Buskirk. 

MacArthur Fellow Tomeka Reid has been pushing the boundaries of jazz cello for nearly two decades. Originally from D.C., Reid trained to be a cellist in the classical realm before discovering her interest in jazz cello. Moving to Chicago she would find her niche in the band of flutist Nicole Mitchell before venturing out on her own as a bandleader. ‘She now leads her own quartet with fellow MacArthur fellow Mary Halvorson as well all leading the string-driven groups Hear In Now and The Hemphill String Quartet as well as performing with The Art Ensemble of Chicago and many others. On today’s show we’ll take an extended look as a leader and collaborator.

Inspired by the beautiful red fall foliage of October and the 108th anniversary of the October Revolution of 1917 (by the old calendar, at least), this show will explore the influence of revolution on music — spawning a new avant-garde classical scene and the foundations of modern industrial music, expressing hope and affirming progress while being fundamentally experimental in a way that later socialist realism could not, and continuing to inform music today through protest music and modernist electronic approaches.

John “Jay” F. Weaver Jr. and Dale Williams, hosts of WPRB’s Wednesday night 90s hip-hop radio show “Vibes and Vapors” will return to Princeton on Friday, October 31st. DJ Bohr and Chef Patti will be airing segments of Jay and Dale’s set on-air from 5:00 pm ET – 8:00 pm ET.

Mon. 11/03 7 – 10 AM – Folkfall Folie with DJ Jagannath. 

Skeletons, plague doctors, and forests (some peaceful and some ominous) in sonic form. Atmospheric black metal inspired by folk music from around the world, the most late-autumn genre there is.

Mon. 11/03 12 – 3 PM – The Music of Vibraphonist Patricia Brennan with Dan Buskirk. 

It’s been a decade since Patricia Brennan, a vibraphonist originally from Veracruz, Mexico, first moved to Brooklyn to begin her career in improvised music. After a handful of memorable appearances on records by artists including John Hollenbeck and Matt Mitchell, Brennan began leading her own releases, beginning with her dazzling 2021 solo disc MAQUISHTI. Brennan’s third release BREAKING STETCH recently won Downbeat Magazine’s “Record of the Year” and just this week her latest, the astronomically-focused OF THE NEAR & FAR has been released to great acclaim.  We’ll take a look at her new work and take this time to take an extended look at the music Brennan has recorded in the last decade.

A bunch of covers from across genres that did it better, sound cooler, or are just more interesting takes on the original!

Sun. 11/09 1 – 3 AM – Derivatives of Anatolian Rock with turshu.

Throughout the show, we’ll move through eras of Turkish music, focusing specifically on psychedelic, folky, and beautifully raw sounds of Anatolian rock. We’ll explore how legends of Anatolian rock influenced the Turkish third wave rock scene and how Turkish pop, rock, metal and jazz evolved through time from their deep roots in Anatolia.

Mon. 11/10 12 – 3 PM – The Music of Guitarist Mary Halvorson with Dan Buskirk.

We’ll take an extended look at the music of MacArthur “Fellow” guitarist Mary Halvorson. Over the last fifteen years, Halvorson has risen to become one of the most-acclaimed instrumentalists in modern creative music, with her elastic, phase-driven guitar sound giving her one of today’s most distinctive voices. Working with everyone from Anthony Braxton, John Zorn to Deerhoof’s John Dieterich, Halvorson stretches and expands her vision with many of today’s most daring musicians. We’ll take an extended look at her work on today’s show.

Chef patti is doing the investigative work to dig up archived mp3 blogs and websites that acted as musical crossroads back in the 00s, many of which are extinct today. It focuses explicitly on fanzines, ask-a-punk calendars, old label sites, and more. Come along for a historical dive into forgotten places, strange .zip files, sketchy torrents and a peak at the nearly lost etchings of forgotten geocities.

Listeners of this special Sangeet show are challenged to identify the musical instrument/composer/singer/Raga/uniqueness of each Indian classical musical piece played on the show and post their answers on the playlist chat.

The most unlikely popular song of the late 1960s grew from the arrrest of Woody Guthrie’s son for littering on Thanksgiving to become a clever and funny anti-war story–song. At least once in this season each year, it feels appropriate – maybe even important – to revisit the saga of Alice and her restaurant. We’ll hear a version updating the original 25 years later.
