The post-war years were boom times for the economy and for music as well. Jazz evolved from be-bop to post-bop, from Charlie Parker to John Coltrane. Blues left the country and came to the big city, suddenly electrified. And it was during the fifties when we had our first rock and roll revolution: Chuck Berry, Little Richard, and Buddy Holly.

McKinley Morganfield – known as “Muddy Waters” – is, by any account, one of the central figures in the history of American popular music. But who was he? And where did he come from? In this program we’ll trace Waters’ career from his earliest field recordings made in Mississippi through his famous Chess records recordings of the 1950s and early 1960s, ending with late-career recordings made with British rock luminaries and controversial efforts to “modernize” his sound for the psychedelic era. Along the way, we will consider the musical and cultural roots of Muddy’s sound and his enduring influence through the rock era.
